Assignments can be placed on hold when something temporarily prevents you from completing the appraisal on time. This article explains when to request a hold, how to request it, how to find assignments that are already on hold, and how to resume work once the hold is lifted.
When to request on hold
Request that the lender place the assignment on hold in situations such as:
The borrower contacts you and asks to postpone the inspection (for example, travel, illness, property not accessible).
You are waiting on required documents from the broker or another party before you can complete the report.
Any other temporary issue that blocks progress on the file (weather, property damage, lender-requested changes, etc.).
In all of these cases, the assignment should not simply be left overdue; a hold keeps the file active but pauses deadlines until the issue is resolved.
How to request a hold
When you need the assignment to be put on hold:
Open the assignment and add an urgent note clearly stating that you are requesting the lender to set the assignment on hold.
Include the specific reason for the hold (for example: “Borrower requested to reschedule inspection,” “Awaiting documents from broker,” etc.).
If possible, provide an ETA for when you expect to be able to resume work (for example: “Expect documents by Jan 25, can resume same day”).
After the lender reviews your note, they will place the assignment on hold and all current due dates will be removed. A banner in the assignment will confirm that the lender has put the file on hold and that no action is required from you until it is resumed.

Where to find on‑hold assignments
Once the lender has placed the assignment on hold, you can still access it in several places:

What happens to due dates and reminders
When an assignment is on hold:
All due dates for that assignment are removed and will be restored with new dates when the lender resumes the assignment from hold.
Automated reminders related to the due date are paused while the assignment remains on hold.
You are not expected to take further action until the lender removes the hold, unless the lender specifically requests an update.
How to resume from hold
If you are ready to continue with the assignment:
Open the assignment and add an urgent note requesting that the lender resume the assignment from hold.
Confirm that the reason for the hold has been resolved (for example: “Borrower confirmed new inspection date,” “All documents received”).
The lender will then reactivate the assignment, set a new due date, and regular due‑date reminders will start again.
